Pizer, Lewis I. (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia). Glycine synthesis and metabolism in Escherichia coli. J. Bacteriol. 89:1145-1150. 1965.-A correlation was demonstrated between a nutritional requirement that can only be satisfied by glycine and the absence of the enzymatic capacity to interconvert l-serine and glycine. Serine synthesis from 3-phosphoglycerate was observed in the same cell-free extracts which could not convert serine to glycine. The above results show that serine is the precursor of glycine under normal growth conditions. The C-2 of glycine provided "one-carbon" fragments when the C-3 of serine was not available as the source of "one-carbon" fragments. This condition occurred when a mutation produced a loss of serine aldolase activity or when a serine-glycine auxotroph was grown with glycine. Under these growth conditions, 30 to 40% of the "one-carbon" fragments used for cellular synthesis were derived from glycine.

Synthesis, morphological, characterization and evaluation of antibacterial effects of Silver-Polyaniline nanocomposites against Escherichia coli
Silver-Polyaniline (Ag-PANI) nanocomposites were prepared by in-situ oxidative polymerization of aniline monomer in sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) solution as an emulsifier. The synthesis of Silver-Polyaniline nanocomposites was investigated as a function of several parameters such as aniline concentration, concentration of emulsifier (AOT), concentration of oxidation agent and c...
متن کاملInvestigating the Influence of MoS2 Nanosheets on E. coli from Metabolomics Level
Molybdenum disulfide, a type of two-dimensional layered material with unique properties, has been widely used in many fields. However, an exact understanding of its toxicity remains elusive, let alone its effects on the environmental microbial community. In this study, we utilized metabolomics technology to explore the effects of different concentrations of molybdenum disulfide nanosheets on Es...
متن کاملSynthesis and Expression of Modified bFGF Gene in Escherichia coli Cells
A new strategy for construction of synthetic gene encoding human basic fibroblast growth factor comprising DNA annealing-ligation and augmentation by polymerase chain reaction was introduced. The sequence of the gene and corresponding amino acid chain were modified in order to increase stability of the protein. First, 300 bp and 160 bp fragments of the gene were assembled from 18 oligonucleotid...
متن کاملGlycine uptake in Escherichia coli. I. Glycine uptake by whole cells of Escherichia coli W+ and a D-serine-resistant.
These experiments were designed to investigate the defect in amino acid uptake in a D-serine-resistant mutant (WS) of Escherichia coli W that is deficient in the uptake of glycine. Under conditions in which there is insignificant metabolism of glycine (i.e. 0” under nitrogen), the wild type took up significant amounts of glycine, whereas the WS mutant did not equilibrate with the external glyci...
متن کاملDeficiency in L-serine deaminase interferes with one-carbon metabolism and cell wall synthesis in Escherichia coli K-12.
Escherichia coli K-12 provided with glucose and a mixture of amino acids depletes L-serine more quickly than any other amino acid even in the presence of ammonium sulfate. A mutant without three 4Fe4S L-serine deaminases (SdaA, SdaB, and TdcG) of E. coli K-12 is unable to do this. The high level of L-serine that accumulates when such a mutant is exposed to amino acid mixtures starves the cells ...
